Creativity = stress + relaxation

When you read the title of this post, you'll most likely think to yourself, "how can stress and relaxation go together?" To that I say think about the following.

Ever wonder why you've been racking your brains for ages to think of an idea for something or to remember something and it never happens? That is the stress bit. And then this idea comes to you perhaps when on a train or walking down the road or often when sat on the toilet (I'm sure you can admit to many a great idea happening in the loo). Well, during these moments is when you are likely to have been in some form of relaxation. See how the two work together?

Your mind is obviously in a stressful state and constantly forcing itself to find a solution which isn't usually a helpful process. The best solutions come when there is less pressure on your mind. This is the theory I'm subscribing to anyway.

But give it a go. Next time you're struggling with an essay or making something creative, take a break from it and see how that works. I guess these kind of situations are why people often say about a problem that you should 'sleep on it'.

Makes sense to me.

Busy

Sometimes life takes over and you get too busy to blog or do anything. But then maybe that keeps you out of trouble. Food for thought.

British weather

Another beautiful Saturday morning has passed and in a matter of no time the sky has turned completely dark and it's bucketing down. Needless to say I'm not dressed for this.

It's June and still no consistent sunshine. Are the heavens trying to tell us something?

Maybe it's a good thing. Less naked people in the streets and a bit more modesty about. Only problem is, I have to go and venture out there.

And that's me moaning about the weather. How awfully British.

The beginning of reluctantly writing

Dear John,

Write they say! Just write. Write or it will all go to waste. Make time for it or it will never happen.

It's all true but I never can seem to make time for it or seem to have the time to do it after working all day. Excuses? Probably. But I'm allowed.

So I Googled 'I am a great writer' and that ended with me creating a blog on which to splash some ideas. A place where I edit my work and ignore any criticism I get. Although ironically I got this great piece of advice from my aforementioned Google search:

Good writers take time to write. They craft and re-craft a piece. They spend hours and days, revising. They take criticism and feedback, listening to both the external and internal voices that drive them.
And they use it all to make their writing better.

So the plan is to do random bits of writing whenever I get the opportunity, maybe short ten minute bursts, that way I don't have to spend ages thinking about what to write, might make it more creative or better. And anyone that reads this blog, your feedback and any comments are requested! So please do join in the discussion.

Regards

The Reluctant Writer

Ps. If you are wondering who John is, you are John.
